My interest in the natural environment has led me to explore some of the common organisms that live within it, but more so the organisms that many of us, may not know much about. For example, the composite organism lichen, which arises from a symbiotic relationship between an algae or bacteria (or both) and fungus. Lichen has been a common member of my environment that I never really thought about, and really knew nothing about. My interests in these organisms’ lye in my relationship with them, or lack thereof. Through visual exploration of these organisms I am exploring my connection to my natural environment.
My overall interest in the relationship between the natural and the man made, and the juxtaposition between the two, really draws me to explore the idea of the “footprint” we leave behind in the natural environment. Furthermore, I am interested in how nature is always fighting back against our need to control it, how it is always pushing back and striving to return wild. My interest in what I have come to call the “grey areas”, I think of these areas as the neglected or over looked has come from this, I am more interested in these grey area relationships because I believe that although often over looked, because of the bigger issues between these two great forces, they are still important relationships to be aware of and respect.
