“Mountain Ash: (Sorbus decora)” is an excerpt from Heywood-Jones’ thesis body of work. The project is fuelled by the desire to develop a comprehensive vocabulary of dye-bearing plants growing in Nova Scotia, while striving to examine the complex relationships between human and botanical spheres.

There are currently 165 swatches housed within the project – each swatch representing a plant/tree/lichen that was harvested and extracted during the calendar year of 2015. The dyed swatches become a complex rendering or record of a plant, a place, a point in time.
